Car travelling a winding dirt road through granite country on Mount Mackenzie Drive at dusk

Mount Mackenzie Drive

Beginning just 9km southwest of Tenterfield, the Mount Mackenzie Scenic Drive offers sweeping views, dramatic granite outcrops, and a refreshing high-country breeze. Covering part of the region’s Tourist Drive 9, you’ll wind your way up to the lookout. Perched over 1,300 metres above sea level, you’ll be treated to panoramic views across the New England Tableland stretching as far as the eye can see — on a clear day, you can spot Girraween National Park across the Queensland border. Perfect for sunrise or sunset photography.

  • Scenic Lookout with picnic tables and interpretive signage
  • Short bushwalks among granite boulders and wildflowers
  • Perfect for sunrise or sunset photography

This is a fantastic quick trip if you’re short on time or want to stretch your legs after exploring the town. Pack a thermos, and a camera, and enjoy the serenity.
