Tourist Drive 9 — Border Mountains Loop

Tourist Drive 9, also known as the Border Mountains Drive, is one of the most rewarding scenic loops in the Northern Tablelands. This full-day drive takes you through some of Tenterfield Shire’s most spectacular landscapes — granite country, towering eucalypt forests, tranquil rivers, and dramatic escarpments.

Suggested Route & Highlights

Mount Mackenzie Scenic Lookout (9km from town) — Over 1,300m above sea level with breathtaking views across the tablelands. Picnic tables and signage. Great for sunrise or a morning cuppa.

Thunderbolt’s Hideout — A short detour to the historic bushranger hideout among massive granite boulders, where Captain Thunderbolt is believed to have taken cover in the 1860s.

Boonoo Boonoo National Park — The plunging Boonoo Boonoo Falls are especially impressive after rain. Short walk to the viewing platform, picnic areas and swimming spots nearby.

Bald Rock National Park — The largest exposed granite monolith in the Southern Hemisphere. Choose the gentle Bungoona Walk or the steeper direct climb for 360-degree views across NSW and Queensland.

Return via the Bruxner Highway — Loop back through rural scenery and cool climate landscape, or extend your adventure by connecting with Girraween or Sundown National Parks.

Spring — Wildflowers and comfortable walking conditions

Winter — Misty mornings and crisp mountain air

Summer — Waterhole swimming and shaded bushwalks

Tips: Bring water, snacks, and a picnic rug. Check road conditions before heading out — mobile reception may be limited in national parks. Allow extra time for walks and photos.
