Torrington State Recreation Area

Torrington is a rugged and fascinating conservation area sprawled across the Mole Tableland, where granite outcrops meet seasonal wildflowers, rare wildlife, and deep cultural significance. This is Ngarrabul, Marbul, Bigambul, and Jucumbul Country, and stories of Dreamtime echo through the land’s boulders, gorges, and creeks.

It’s a place of contrasts — home to more than 750 plant species, threatened fauna like the Powerful Owl and Tiger Quoll, and remnants of a mining history that once saw the search for tin, beryl, emerald, and topaz. In spring, the landscape bursts into colour with purple and yellow wildflowers, attracting both photographers and rare birdlife such as the Turquoise Parrot and Regent Honeyeater.

Visiting

• Getting there: From Tenterfield, drive south on the New England Highway for 50km, then turn right onto Stannum Road. Continue approximately 30km to reach Torrington township. Roads are sealed until close to the park, then mostly well-maintained unsealed roads.
• Park entry fee: Free
• Facilities: Toilets, picnic tables, communal wood BBQ (BYO wood), car parking at trailheads and picnic areas. No drinking water — bring your own.

Camping

Camping is available at Blatherarm Campground, located near a scenic creek and a great base for walking or fossicking. Booking is recommended and camping permit fees apply. It’s basic but serene – you may even have it to yourself mid-week. No powered sites or showers – bring all essentials.

A tranquil trail through bushland to a seasonal waterfall, especially beautiful after rain. Keep an eye out for grass trees, rare wildflowers, and colourful robins and treecreepers.
